Halsnøy kloster_0106SUNNHORDLAND MUSEUM invites artists working with photography as their means of
expression to come to the island of Halsnøy, off the west coast of Norway, to stay and
work in a very special place.
THE MONASTERY comprises the ruins of an Augustine medieval monastery established
in 1163. Among the ruins is a rustic old mansion from 1841, where the invited artists will stay. The monastery is a part of Sunnhordland Museum, and is situated in beautiful surroundings on the island of Halsnøy at the inlet of the Hardanger fjord. Over the years the Monastery has become a centre for arts and culture, offering concerts,
exhibitions and other kinds of cultural activities. The Monastery is now also becoming a centre for photography, by offering this international Artist in Residence program for photographers, and also photographic workshops and lectures.

We have close relations with the art school Sunnhordland Folkehøgskule, which offers studies in drama / film, dance, music, visual arts, sound production, and games design. The school is situated 5 minutes ́ walk from the monastery.

bilde klosteret (1)THE PROGRAM: Sunnhordland Museum offers this residency to photographers worldwide.
We encourage both emerging and mid-career artists – preferrably with some exhibition experience – to apply.

The museum offers a three-week free stay at the mansion, – a beautiful house with all antique furniture, in a very special historical spot. As can be expected in a historical museum, the house does not have the highest modern standard, but you will sleep in a very cozy bedroom with a splendid view to the garden and the ruins.

There is a bathroom and a well equipped kitchen. There is also a television set, and you will be able to connect with the rest of the world through internet (wi-fi).

Darkroom facilities will be available in the basement, if required.

There will be two residency periods of three weeks each, between May and October.
You should expect to share your residency period with two other artists, as 6 artists
will be invited.
The artists who come to Halsnøy may also be asked to give a lecture or a short workshop, either at the art school or at the monastery.

It is further expected from those accepted for the residency, that they will have an exhibition or a presentation of work that has been done during their stay at the
monastery.

HOW TO APPLY:

face-to-face or via e-mail

We attend some festivals (such as Rencontres d´Arles, and others), and if you have the opportunity, please make an appointment with us there, for a review. We ask that you bring to the table your portfolio, and any thoughts and ideas you may have for the residency period, should you be selected.

If you wish to apply via e-mail, please send us any information you feel is relevant, some images or link to website, and your thoughts for the residency. There is no form to fill in, but we need your application by end of June each year, and the selection will be made for the following year.

E-mail address: oh@oyvindhjelmen.com

What are we looking for?

In short: good quality, good thoughts and good people.

Also, we feel it is important to have diversity; artists working in different directions, with different expressions. Each year we pre-select 12 applicants for a shortlist, and this shortlist will be announced the second or third week of July. The final selection of 6 artists to be invited for the residency the following year, will be announced by the end of August.

We look forward to your application!

2018:

For 2018, there will be two residency periods of three weeks each, between May and October. You should expect to share your residency period with two other artists,
as 6 artists may/will be invited for 2018.

The artists who come to Halsnøy may also be asked to give a lecture or a short workshop, either at the art school or at the monastery.

It is further expected from those accepted for the residency, that they will have an exhibition or a presentation of work that has been done during their stay at the
Monastery. This presentation should preferably take place 6 to 12 months after the stay. Sunnhordland Museum has regular exhibitions at the site, and will assist you in planning and promoting this event. The main exhibition space is in the basement of the house, but in some cases the whole area and all buildings can be used for the presentation / exhibition. The museum may ask that one piece made during the residency period is donated to the museum´s collection.

As the situation is today, Sunnhordland Museum can not – unfortunately – offer to pay travel expenses or production costs.

We offer a contribution towards food for each periodic stay.

We will also assist visitors with all practical details and all information they need to make the stay comfortable and productive.
Also, an official invitation will be sent you if selected, to help you apply for funding in your country.

The selection of artists to be invited is normally done by the end of august each year, for the periods of the following year.
